The Day of Pentecost is often recognised as the birth of the Christian Church. On this day, the members of the early church received the supernatural empowerment of the Holy Spirit. This empowerment enabled them to effectively continue the miraculous work of Jesus Christ on the earth, even though He was no longer physically present with them.

The Day of Pentecost: Meaning and Bible Study will examine this miraculous event through the historical, spiritual, and relational perspectives that prepared the New Testament church to fulfil Christ's mandate to go into all the world and preach the gospel.

The Day of Pentecost: Meaning and Bible Study

Principle Scripture

When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven. And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language.

Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born? Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.” So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “Whatever could this mean?”

(Acts 2:1-12)

Looking At The Historical Perspective

Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.” So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city. Therefore its name is called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth...

(Genesis 11:7-9)

The Cohesion Lost In The Tower Of Babel (Confusion)

By placing linguistic barriers between the people of the earth, God separated them into tribes and nations until the time was fulfilled for His eternal Kingdom to be revealed through the coming of His Son, Jesus Christ. God's original direction was for mankind to fill the whole earth, not assemble in one location, because only through the coming of the Kingdom of God could mankind find true unity. Receiving the Lordship of the Holy Spirit is the key to worldwide, lasting peace, and its absence is the main reason multiculturalism is failing in Western society.

(Acts 17:26-27)

And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings, so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us;

Understanding The Diaspora (The Dispersion)

The Nations Of The Dispersion Present On The Day Of Pentecost:

(Iran, Iraq, Azerbaijan, Syria, Kuwait, Israel, Turkey, Egypt, Libya, Italy, Greece, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain)

The Jewish Dispersion Throughout History
The Jewish Dispersion

The term Diaspora (from the Greek word meaning "to scatter" or "disperse") refers to a population of people who have been scattered away from their original homeland, either by force or by choice. It describes the scattering of the Jewish people throughout history.

The historical context of the Jewish Diaspora across these regions on the Day of Pentecost stems from centuries of forced deportations, voluntary migrations, and trade networks under successive global empires.

The Reason For The Dispersion

The Promised Exile For Continued Disobedience

God is faithful to do what He has promised, whether it involves bringing His blessings or His judgments for continued acts of defiance. These judgments were sometimes able to be delayed or even forgiven by the intercession of godly prophets, priests, or kings. However, Israel failed to show a substantial change in attitude, or in the actions following that change, and would eventually suffer the judgments God had continually warned them of.

(Ezekiel 36:19)

So I scattered them among the nations, and they were dispersed throughout the countries; I judged them according to their ways and their deeds

(Deuteronomy 31:20)

When I have brought them to the land flowing with milk and honey, of which I swore to their fathers, and they have eaten and filled themselves and grown fat, then they will turn to other gods and serve them; and they will provoke Me and break My covenant

(Leviticus 26:33)

I will scatter you among the nations and draw out a sword after you;

your land shall be desolate and your cities waste

(Deuteronomy 4:27)

And the Lord will scatter you among the peoples, and you will be left few in number among the nations where the Lord will drive you

(Deuteronomy 28:64)

“Then the Lord will scatter you among all peoples, from one end of the earth to the other, and there you shall serve other gods, which neither you nor your fathers have known—wood and stone.

  1. The Babylonian Exile: In 586 BC, King Nebuchadnezzar destroyed the First Temple and exiled Judeans to Babylon (modern Iraq).

  2. The Persian Rule: When Cyrus the Great conquered Babylon in 539 BC, he allowed Jews to return to Jerusalem. However, a significant majority chose to stay, flourishing under Persian rule (modern Iran).

Understanding The Feast Of Weeks (Shavuot)

The word Pentecost means 'fiftieth day' and happens 7 weeks (49 days) after the celebration of Easter (Jewish Passover). Pentecost coincides with the Jewish feast of Shavuot, a harvest festival that is celebrated seven weeks and one day after the first day of Passover.

The Wheat Harvest
The Wheat Harvest

According to the Old Testament, you would go to the day of the Firstfruits celebration, and beginning with that day, you would count off 50 days. The fiftieth day would be the Day of Pentecost. So Firstfruits (Passover) is the beginning of the barley harvest, while the Feast of Weeks (Pentecost) celebrates the beginning of the wheat harvest.

The Law Of Moses Vs Grace Through Jesus Christ

Jewish tradition holds that the giving of the Law at Mount Sinai occurred on this day. When Moses descended from Mount Sinai with the 10 Commandments, Israel had fallen into sin, and Moses' judgment upon them saw 3,000 people slain. Whereas, on the Day of Pentecost, the “firstfruits” of the church were gathered by Christ as some 3,000 people heard Peter present the gospel and were saved.

(Exodus 32:28)

So the sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses. And about three thousand men of the people fell that day

(Acts 2:41-42)

Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.

Looking At The Spiritual Perspective

And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you

(John 14:16-17)

The Coming Of The Person Of The Holy Spirit

The Day of Pentecost was the arrival of the Helper (Greek): Parakletos

Meaning:

a) an advocate

(b) a consoler, comforter, helper;

(c) An intercessor

It is important to realise initially that the arrival and indwelling of the Holy Spirit is not merely the presence of a force or power, but the presence of a person. Although many biblical descriptions of the Holy Spirit emphasize His actions, we should never forget that the Holy Spirit is God, working on earth to help His children in the church preach the gospel to the whole world.

Key Evidences of Personhood

  • Mind and Intelligence: The Spirit has a mind, searches the deep things of God, and teaches believers.

  • Will and Choice: Spiritual gifts and decisions are distributed according to the Spirit's own will

  • Emotions: The Bible notes that the Holy Spirit can be grieved or insulted.

  • Personal Actions: The Spirit speaks, guides, comforts, and intercedes for people.

The Empowerment Of The Church

The Scripture describes Jesus Christ's life as full of miracles, signs, and wonders. The Apostles who walked with Christ for 3 years consistently witnessed remarkable things that were simply impossible for a man to do. Jesus perfect, sinless life, empowered by the Holy Spirit after His baptism by John, and the testing in the wilderness that followed enabled these extraordinary exploits.

The same Holy Spirit that dwelt in Christ now dwells in the church, enabling us to continue Christ's miraculous work of declaring the Kingdom of God through preaching the Gospel.

(Acts 1:8)

But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.

(Acts 2:32-33)

This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear.

(1 Corinthians 2:4-5)

And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.

(Matthew 3:16)

When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him

(Luke 24:49)

Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.

(Mark 16:20)

And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs.

How Do You Know If You Have Received The Holy Spirit?

*The Biblical evidence for having been baptised with the Holy Spirit is the ability to speak in tongues (languages) that you have never learnt before. This baptism of power is available to every Christian believer who seeks God with all their heart and obeys His will.

(Acts 2:4)

And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance

(Acts 10:44-46)

While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.

*It is, however, possible to be born again (saved) without receiving the empowerment of Holy Spirit baptism, although God desires all His children to be filled with the Holy Spirit. In the following scriptures, we see that a revival had occurred in the town of Samaria, and the city was filled with great joy as a result of God's salvation, yet the Holy Spirit had not fallen on any of them.

This lack of spiritual power was quickly remedied by the arrival of the Apostles Peter and John and the subsequent impartation of the Holy Spirit to the new believers.

(Acts 8:4-8)

Therefore those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word. Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ to them. And the multitudes with one accord heeded the things spoken by Philip, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. For unclean spirits, crying with a loud voice, came out of many who were possessed; and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed. And there was great joy in that city

(Acts 8:14-17)

Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit

(1 Corinthians 2:12-14)

Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

The Holy Spirit's Actions Within The Church

Here is a short list of what the Holy Spirit does:

1) The Holy Spirit Teaches Truth:

He guides believers to understand Scripture by reminding them of Jesus' words.

(John 14:26)

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

(John 16:13)

However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come

2) The Holy Spirit Empowers Witness:

Gives courage and strength to share the Christian message with others.

(Acts 4:31)

And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness

(2 Timothy 1:7)

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind

3) The Holy Spirit Intercedes for Us:

He prays on behalf of believers in times of weakness.

(Romans 8:26-27)

Likewise, the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God

4) The Holy Spirit Transforms Character:

The Holy Spirit fills people with love and produces spiritual growth through Sanctification and the Renewal of the Mind. Sanctification is the process of being set apart for God and growing more like Jesus Christ. He leads us through a lifelong process of stripping away old, sinful habits and replacing them with godly characteristics. This is encouraged through daily bible study, changing what we believe and how we think, enabling a transformation of our will, our actions, and our character.

(1 Thessalonians 4:3a)

For this is the will of God, your sanctification

5) The Holy Spirit Connects And Seals:

Connecting believers spiritually to Christ and each other through salvation.

(Romans 8:9)

But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His

(Ephesians 1:13)

In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise

(Ephesians 4:30)

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption

(2 Corinthians 1:22)

who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.

Biblical Expressions of the Holy Spirit's Emotions

The Holy Spirit is a distinct, conscious divine person within the Trinity, rather than an impersonal force or energy. Christian theology and biblical texts support the personhood of the Holy Spirit through specific attributes, actions, and personal characteristics

1) Expressions of Grief:

The Greek word for grieve is lupeo, which means to cause deep emotional pain, sorrow, or sadness. Scripture warns believers not to "grieve the Holy Spirit of God," showing that human sin, bitterness, or malice cause Him deep sorrow.

(Ephesians 4:30)

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

2) Expressions of Joy:

The Bible reveals that believers who had received God's word shared in spiritual gladness.

(1 Thessalonians 1:6)

And you became followers of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit

(Luke 10:21)

In that hour Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and revealed them to babes. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight

3) Expressions of Groaning:

The Spirit helps our weakness and intercedes for us with "wordless groans," expressing profound empathy and concern in our suffering.

(Romans 8:26b)

But the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered

4) Expressions Of Yearning Jealously

The Spirit experiences a holy "jealousy" or intense yearning. This is not a toxic envy, but the passionate, protective love of a covenant partner. The Spirit actively desires undivided devotion and feels the emotional weight of relational betrayal when believers turn away.

(James 4:5)

Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously”?

5) Expressions Of Love

The Holy Spirit actively shows His love to believers by comforting, guiding, and interceding for them

(Romans 15:30)

Now I beg you, brethren, through the Lord Jesus Christ, and through the love of the Spirit, that you strive together with me in prayers to God for me,

Interactions With The Holy Spirit Found In The Bible

1) The Holy Spirit can be Resisted:

(Acts 7:51)

You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you

(Acts 26:14)

And when we all had fallen to the ground, I heard a voice speaking to me and saying in the Hebrew language, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.’

2) The Holy Spirit can be Quenched:

Like a lamp or candle, the light and life of the Holy Spirit inside us can be put out if we do not live in a way that honours Him.

(1 Thessalonians 5:19)

 Do not quench the Spirit.

3) The Holy Spirit can be Lied to:

When God is moving powerfully in the church, His presence should inspire fear and reverence. Those who disregard or downplay His holiness are subject to judgment.

(Acts 5:3-4)

But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.”

4) The Holy Spirit can be Insulted:

(Hebrews 10:29)

Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?

Old Testament Prophecies Regarding The Coming Of The Holy Spirit

The prophesied infilling of the Holy Spirit would bring both supernatural abilities (dreams and visions) and a spiritual realignment of the human heart, that we might love God as He desires and deserves.

(Joel 2:28)

“And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions

(Jeremiah 31:33)

But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people

(Ezekiel 36:26-27)

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit Within The Church

For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills

(1 Corinthians 12:8-11)

The Distribution Of Spiritual Gifts

(Acts 1:4-5)

And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

(1 Corinthians 12:1)

Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant

(1 Corinthians 1:5)

that you were enriched in everything by Him in all utterance and all knowledge,

(1 Corinthians 12:4-7)

There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:

Diversities : (Greek) diairesis- difference, diversity

Ministries : (Greek) diakonia- administer, service

Activities : (Greek) energéma- an effect -the operation, working.

Manifestation : (Greek) phanerósis- expression, a bestowment

What Does This Mean Practically?

Simply put, it means that God's gifts may be revealed differently through different people. It could be the same gift, but by using different vessels (believers), He can more effectively reach different people in different ways. Someone may respond better to the way one person (ministry) operates or activates a specific spiritual gift rather than another person. They are therefore enabled to receive the expression or blessing (bestowment) that God desires for them.

God Himself chooses the specific roles and gifts that each person in the Body of Christ shall receive. The gifts and life experiences that we go through prepare and enable us to function effectively in the roles that God has chosen for us personally.

(1 Corinthians 12:18)

But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as He pleased

The Apostle Paul's Teaching On Speaking In Tongues

Praying in Tongues is a spiritual weapon given by God to the members of His body, the Church. Those who are filled with the Holy Spirit are gifted with a supernatural ability to speak in previously unknown languages, whether divine or earthly. The exercise of this gift strengthens Christian believers to 'walk in the Spirit', imparts deeper understanding of biblical and spiritual truths, and enables supernatural acts and intercession before God's Throne.

(1 Corinthians 13:1a)

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels...

(1 Corinthians 14:18)

I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all

(1 Corinthians 14:14a)

For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, ..

(1 Corinthians 14:2)

For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.

The Fruit of The Holy Spirit

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law

(Galatians 5:22-23)

The fruit of the Holy Spirit is the gradual revelation over time of nine character traits the Holy Spirit produces in the lives of believers. Although all of these qualities develop simultaneously in the heart of the Christian disciple, some may be more evident than others in each individual's life.

The Nine Character Traits

  • Love: Caring for others through active sacrifice and kindness, putting others first.

  • Joy: A deep, lasting gladness that comes from God, regardless of your current circumstances.

  • Peace: A calm inner stability and wholeness (from the Hebrew shalom) that remains firm during life's trials.

  • Patience: The ability to endure hard times and delays without anger or frustration.

  • Kindness: Showing active compassion and meeting the practical needs of others.

  • Goodness: An upright heart that is motivated to do what is right and good for everyone.

  • Faithfulness: Being loyal, trustworthy, and depending completely on God.

  • Gentleness: Approaching others with humility, care, and respect rather than harshness.

  • Self-Control: Disciplining your thoughts, words, and desires rather than being controlled by them

How Do You Grow This Fruit?

You cannot produce this spiritual fruit through human willpower alone. Just as a branch naturally bears fruit by staying attached to a living vine, a believer grows these traits by staying connected to Christ.

To Cultivate Fruit In Your Daily Life:

Spend regular time in prayer and reading God's Word.

Depend daily on the Holy Spirit for guidance and strength.

Choose to practice kindness, patience, and self-control when interacting with others.

Looking At The Relational Perspective

Unity Through The Indwelling Of The Holy Spirit

The day of Pentecost fulfilled God's desire to live within every believer, rather than merely His Old Testament Prophets or Priests. Having the same Holy Spirit guiding every member of Christ's church enabled a level of unity beyond that which was available elsewhere in the world.

This internal dwelling enables a process called Sanctification, which begins as an initial transformation of heart and then develops into changed beliefs and behaviours. As every believer puts God first in their lives, seeking His will and walking in His ways, they are continually being changed more and more into the image of their Saviour Jesus Christ.

Relationships within God's Church are meant to be governed by Scripture and led daily by the Holy Spirit. God designed this to be accomplished through the oversight and godly administration of Apostles, Prophets, Pastors, Evangelists, and Teachers within the body of Christ.

(Acts 2:42)

And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers

(1 Corinthians 4:21)

What do you want? Shall I come to you with a rod, or in love and a spirit of gentleness?

Those appointed by God as leaders within the church have both the authority and the responsibility to guide, protect, and cherish the precious lives of each believer. This authority comes with the acknowledgement that God Himself will judge the leaders' actions and motivations when we all stand before God's throne.

(Matthew 25:40)

And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.

Comforting Each Other In The Church

We comfort others in the church by using the same compassionate support, patience, and presence that God gives us in our own times of trouble. Believers encourage each other in the same way that they also have been encouraged.

(Philippians 2:1-4)

Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.

(2 Corinthians 1:3-4)

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

The Ways That God Comforts Us

  1. His Word: His living Word speaking to our hearts

  2. His Presence: God draws near to us in our suffering instead of staying far away.

  3. His Empathy: He is known as the "Father of compassion and the God of all comfort".

  4. His Strength: He strengthens our hearts when we feel weak, burdened, or afraid.

How We Practically Comfort Others
  • Listen Patiently: Sit with people in their pain just as God patiently stays with us through our hardships.

  • Share Grace: Pass on the practical love, mercy, and encouragement we have already received.

  • Offer Hope: Remind others they are not alone and that healing is possible.

Conclusion

The coming of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost began a transformation in the world. By fulfilling God's historical purposes originating at the Tower of Babel, it was able to assist men of many different languages to understand each other and the magnificence of His coming Kingdom.

The Holy Spirit's arrival on earth also made supernatural power available to those who were called to continue Christ's work of preaching the gospel to every nation and tribe, with signs and wonders following.

And the Holy Spirit's abiding presence within every believer enabled a level of divine love and unity within the church, strengthening God's church in faith and providing the courage required to face the ongoing persecution of a morally and spiritually corrupt world.
